THE WILY FOX

A fox was so hungry he felt he was going to die. In spite of his weakness , the fox went searching for something to appease his hunger . Somewhere near a farm , the fox found a pretentious rooster, perched on a wall , singing at " the-top-of-his-voice " .

Proudly shaking his red comb, the rooster looked like an easy prey to the fox. The fox knew that most of the pretentious are " feeble-minded . Thinking of a way to eat the rooster and after a one-week forced fasting , the fox was pacing back and forth .

With a stick in the hand , the fox carefully approached the rooster always singing , perched on the wall . The rooster was surprised to see a fox approaching , leaning with difficulty on a stick . With a weak voice the fox said to the rooster . " Hello , king of birds and undisputed master of the hens ! " The rooster asked : " Why the flattery talks ? crippled fox ... Can't you be sincere ? "

The fox threw the stick away and said to the rooster . " You are good ... One can hide nothing from you ! " As a matter of fact , I wanted to test you to see weather you fulfill the difficult role of a king ! " A community of hens have entrusted me with the task of finding a beautiful and brave rooster " .

A rooster with a beautiful comb who would be crowned as their king . Farewell , I have no time to waste . The fox left , moving in small paces , hoping for the rooster to follow without delay . The fox was worried for a moment. Did the rooster change his mind ? The fox was pleasantly surprised to find the rooster in front , walking in large paces.

The fox caught the rooster who believed the flatterer . Then, the fox strangled him. While plucking the rooster , the fox had saliva dripping from his mouth . What a well-deserved feast. Satisfied , the fox thought : " Now , let's look for another " pretentious " .

Joha's Visitors

One day a visitor came to Joha 's house. "I am your father's friend from Baghdad," he said, "and I have brought you a duck to celebrate the visit." Joha was delighted. He asked his wife to cook the duck, and served the visitor a fine dinner.
The next day another visitor arrived . "I am the friend of the man who brought you the duck," he said. Joha invited him in and gave him a good meal. The next day another visitor arrived, and said he was the friend of the friend of the man who had brought the duck. Again Joha invited him in for a meal. However, he was getting annoyed. Visitors seemed to be using his house as a restaurant.

Then another visitor came, and said he was the friend of the friend of the friend of the man who had brought the duck. Joha invited him to eat dinner with him. His wife brought some soup to the table and the visitor tasted it. "What kind of soup is this?" asked the visitor. "It tastes just like warm water." "Ah!" said Joha, "That is the soup of the soup of the soup of the duck."

THE ANT'S LESSON

Layla was a beautiful , polite and obedient little girl . However , she had one major flaw in her personality. Layla was lazy and she detested work . She did do her homeworks nor studied her lessons . On account of her low grades , Layla was constantly scolded by her mother . In addition to her mother , Layla was scolded and punished by her teacher for not making any efforts to study.

Unfortunately , Layla passed her time playing in the garden , building sandcastles and picking flowers. One day, as Layla went to the garden , she noticed a pile of dry straws. As she moved closer , she noticed a lot of grains spread in the sun and an army of busy ants . She asked an ant : " What are you doing there , little ant ? " . " I am preparing provisions for winter . Then , all of us ants will put them in our ant-hill " , said the ant . "The task is difficult and we are small , but we are active and persevering " , the ant continued.

Layla said : " I have to strain myself ; my father brings us food and takes care of us ". Layla continued : ” In winter , our houses , made of solid stones , protects us from the cold wind and rain . I don't have to work nor tire myself ". " You lazy little girl " , said the ant , " you seem to lack a lot of experience " . The ant continued , " Nothing comes without effort and hard work . While you play in the garden , your father sweats and works " . What if your father falls sick ? ... I doubt if you would enjoy yourself , like you do now , " said the ant . " I believe we feel more pleasure when we have worked hard. Then, rest is worth it " .

Throughout the conversation , Layla was intently listening and was convinced of the ants words . Hurriedly , she went back to the house . Layla sat at her table and started to study. She worked very hard for a full month. As a consequence of her hard work , Layla passed the exams . Her parents and her teacher were quiet pleased . From that day on , and thanks to the words of the ant , Layla became industrious in her studies.

Joha's Decision

An Arab beggar arrived in Baghdad. When he passed the bakery, he
smelled the pleasing smells of many kinds of foods, but he didn't have any money. He took stale bread out of his bag and softened it with the steam coming out, and then ate it.
The baker astonishingly watched this for a few moments. When his bread finished, the beggar wanted to leave. The baker stopped him and demanded money. They exchanged hot words. Coincidentally, Joha passed by. The beggar wanted Joha's decision.
Joha said to the baker, "Did this person eat your food or not?"
"He didn't eat the food, but certainly benefited from its steam." said the baker.
Joha said to him, "This is correct. Listen!" He took a few coins out of his pocket, and one by one showed them to the baker, dropped them on the ground, and then picked them up. He said to the baker, "Take the noise of these coins."
Extremely surprised, the baker asked, "What kind of way is this to give money?"
Joha replied, "According to my just decision, the person that sells smells and steam should, in exchange, get the noise and tinkling of coins."

The INTELLIGENT GOAT

Gota was not as strong as the mate goat ; yet , she was courageous , wise and intelligent . One day , after having grazed the grass with the flock , Gota sat near a tree to rest . Later , Goto stood up and looked around but found no one . She wondered : " where did the flock go ? " Gota waited for the shepherd or the dog to show up ... Alas , there was no one . Night fell and the noon appeared .By the moment the clouds covered the moon, fear came over Gota .

However , the moon reappeared. Nonetheless , Gota was still afraid from the bad wolf , she had so much heard about. In addition to her fear , Gota started feeling hungry and terrible lonely. Suddenly , a wolf appeared from the shade . He was a big one with vicious eyes and menacing fangs . The wolf looked even more terrible in the clear , while approaching bored . Gota , trying to appear calm succeeded in hiding her fear with an astonished smile.


Gota said to the wolf : " Hello stranger ! Allah sent you to keep me company . I was awfully bored all alone ... " . Houling , the wolf interrupted : " You are not trembling little goat ? Don't you know that I am the wolf ? " The wolf continued : " I was searching for food to give my starving cubs ... and I found it " . Gota replied : " I, too, have small ones , if you don't mind , I will call them and we will all eat together " .

Quickly , Gota grabbed a flute and started blowing it so hard and so loud , that all those who were asleep were awaken . The sounds of the flute reached the ears of the shepherd who , along his dog , were looking for the last goat . Armed with a club and followed by his faithful dog , the shepherd ran to help the distressed goat . The wolf was knocked out by a blow on the head . Gota returned home , escorted by the shepherd and the dog . So , thanks to Allah and due to her intelligence and calm , Gota managed to escape from a dangerous situation .

Joha Goes Shopping

One day Joha went to town to buy new clothes. First he tried on a pair of trousers. He didn't like the trousers, so he gave them back to the shopkeeper. Then he tried a robe which had the same price as the trousers. Joha was pleased with the robe, and he left the shop. Before he climbed on his donkey to ride home, the shopkeeper and the shop-assistant ran out.

"You didn't pay for the robe!" said the shopkeeper.

"But I gave you the trousers in exchange for the robe, didn't I?" replied Joha.

THE FARMER & THE ANIMALS

Following a long and tiring day in the fields , the bull , exhausted , returned to the stable , panting . weak from fatigue , the bull collapsed on the ground , moaning in complaints . Watching , the donkey said to the bull : " What is the matter , my friend ? You are in really deplorable state " . The bull replied : " I am exhausted. The fields are vast and the farmer is without pity".

The donkey advised the bull not to accept work like a slave or , at least , to try and avoid working. The bull reminded the donkey that it was difficult to stand up against the man who exploits the animals. " Man will not hesitate to get rid of an inactive and unproductive animal . To fake it and avoid work! How to do it?"


The donkey suggested : " Pretend you are ill. Do not eat. Do not drink . You will be really ill " . " When he notices that you are incapable of even standing .. or moving , our master will let you rest ". The master who understand the language of animals , heard the conversation between the donkey and the bull.

The next morning , carrying his personal things in a bag, the farmer went to the stable . He found the bull lying on the ground . The animal , exhausted and looking ill, was moaning in pain . Leaving the bull, the man approached the astonished donkey , took hold of him and took him in a docile way to the fields. Buckled to the heavy plough , the donkey worked laboriously the vast fields throughout the day.

When night fell, breathless and extremely tired, the donkey returned to the stable, where the bull was resting . The bull , obviously less tired after a full day of rest , enquired with the donkey on how did he manage. The donkey replied : " My friend , I have some alarming news " . I heard our master say : " If the bull is not in shape by tomorrow , I will have to cut his throat " . As such I advise you to eat well , regain your strength, lest you will face some misfortune " . The bull followed the advice of the friend who said " we should not occupy ourselves with the affairs of others ".

Joha and the Beggar

One day, Joha was up on the roof of his house, mending a hole in the tiles. He had nearly finished, and he was pleased with his work. Suddenly, he heard a voice below call "Hello!" When he looked down, Joha saw an old man in dirty clothes standing below.

"What do you want?" asked Joha.

"Come down and I'll tell you," called the man.

Joha was annoyed, but he was a polite man, so he put down his tools. Carefully, he climbed all the way down to the ground.

"What do you want?" he asked,

"Could you spare a little money for an old beggar?" asked the old man. Joha thought for a minute.

Then he said, "Come with me." He began climbing the ladder again. The old man followed him all the way to the top. When they were both sitting on the roof, Joha turned to the beggar.
"No," he said.
